Causes of CP

In the majority of cases, the cause of cerebral palsy is unknown. However there are a number of factors or causal pathways that may contribute to cerebral palsy including damage to the brain that may occur before, during or after birth. It may also be the result of an infection or accident.

Other factors are low birth weights, premature births and multiple births.

Research in WA indicates approximately one third of cerebral palsy cases occurred when birth was very premature and 8% during birth. Around a further 15% of cases have been attributed to an event that occurred in very early childhood.

The majority of families with a child with cerebral palsy worry about the cause and often blame themselves for its occurrence, thinking that they should or could have done something to prevent it. Whilst this is understandable, in the vast majority of cases, the cause of cerebral palsy could not have been prevented. The Centre for Cerebral Palsy encourages families to discuss their concerns and fears with each other and the team involved in the care of their child.
