Our History

Established in 1951 by a group of dedicated parents working together to provide support and services for their own children that were diagnosed with cerebral palsy,The Centre for Cerebral Palsy was called The Spastic Welfare Association of WA Inc.

The name The Cerebral Palsy Association of Western Australia Ltd was formally adopted in 1992 and in line with the outstanding work we do in the area of CP management and support to those with a disability we refreshed our name and logo in 2007.

Our new name, The Centre for Cerebral Palsy aptly captures what we do - we are at the centre or 'hub' of research and innovation, quality services and support in the area of cerebral palsy. Our logo retains the forget-me-not flower, in a more contemporary form. This flower has served as the visual symbol of our organisation since the 1950s and retaining it acknowledges our strong history and the goodwill our brand has already achieved.

Since our first full time treatment centre the Sir James Mitchell Centre in Mt Lawley was opened, The Centre for Cerebral Palsy has steadily grown with a major expansion of services to children and adults with cerebral palsy. The delivery of these services has occurred from a number of locations, culminating in the move to our current home, the Sir David Brand Centre in Coolbinia, in 1980.

At our inception, The Centre for Cerebral Palsy operated as a parent funded organisation. This has changed dramatically over the years with the growth of the organisation, extension of the services we provide, securing of Commonwealth and State Government funding, and the introduction of professional fundraising.

Today, we are one of WA's leading disability service providers, assisting over 1000 clients from 33 locations across the metropolitan area.
