Children and Young People with a Disability in Western Australia
The Minister for Disability Services The Hon Sheila McHale officially launched a paper, which has been written to inform policy development in relation to children and young people with a disability in WA over the next decade, at The Centre for Cerebral Palsy on Wednesday 9 May 2007. Titled “Children and Young People with a Disability in Western Australia” the paper was commissioned by National Disability Services (WA).
Ms Anita Ghose, Chair of National Disability Services (WA) Children and Youth Sub Committee said “Childhood is a significant stage in the human lifespan, where there is great capacity for development. This is of particular importance to children and young people with a disability and they should be given every opportunity, through quality services and support to realise their potential”.
“As a community we should strive for continued and improved investment in this life stage, the benefits of which continue far into adulthood, and set the strong foundations for better lives for those living with a disability and their families” she said.
The papers research findings were based on qualitative and quantative data at a state and national level and included the experiences, journeys and perspectives of families of children and young people with a disability.
