Classification Of Cerebral Palsy

The functional abilities of children with cerebral palsy can be classified in three ways.

These are in terms of their:

  • functional communication,
  • manual ability, and
  • gross motor function.

Each of these classification systems consists of five levels.

Classifying Children's Functional Communication

The Functional Communication Classification Scale (FCCS) is a tool for classifying children’s functional communication or the way that they communicate in everyday situations.

Classifying Children’s Manual Ability

The Manual Ability Classification Scale (MACS) is a tool for classifying children’s manual ability or hand function.

Classifying Children’s Gross Motor Function

The Gross Motor Function Classification Scale (GMFCS) is a tool for classifying children’s gross motor function or mobility function.
