Opportunities Program

Opportunities is an alternative to employment program that provides clients with cerebral palsy and other disabilities access to studio and community based activities, Monday to Friday.

As the name suggests, people are provided with the opportunity to participate in a range of community and studio based activities including the pursuit of hobbies, computing, recreation and leisure, education programs and life skills courses.

The program is flexible and tailored to meet the individual needs of participants as each term programs are designed in consultation with clients and their families. Most activities are currently provided within small groups, however, one to one options are also available.

The aim of the program is to assist individuals with cerebral palsy and other disabilities to learn key life skills by:

  • Promoting personal growth through the pursuit of leisure activities, hobbies and education;
  • Providing access to, integration with and inclusion in the community;
  • Building an awareness of personal rights and responsibilities; and
  • Facilitating independence.
As the program is utilised by a diverse range of individuals, activity options are flexible and varied in order to provide participants with choice and the opportunity to get involved in meaningful and enjoyable activities including:
  • Leisure pursuits and hobbies;
  • Creative arts and crafts;
  • Socialisation;
  • Sensory and relaxation experiences;
  • Independent living skills;
  • Personal development;
  • Health and well-being; and
  • Learning experiences.
All activities are structured to:
  • Maintain and enhance independence through skill development
  • Promote valued social roles
  • Create positive experiences through access to meaningful and enjoyable activities
  • Facilitate participation and access to the local community
  • Promote the development of natural support networks
  • Reflect the individual's choices and respond to changing needs.
Participants enrol in one of three studios located in Canning Vale, Malaga and Mount Lawley and participate in activities on a term basis. Activities are run from each of the studios as well as undertaken in the general community with assistance from Community Support Officers who help with transport, evaluation of activities and personal care.

In order to be eligible for the Opportunities Programme, individuals must be 18 or older, have Alternative to Employment Funding [ATE] and have a physical disability with support needs that preclude them from accessing vocational programs or employment.
